Sacred Fire, Flowing Water

Every autumn, women from Nepal’s Terai region gather by the Bagmati River. They lead Chaat Puja, a sacred festival honoring the Sun God, Surya.

For four days, they fast, pray, and bathe in the river. At sunrise and sunset, they offer fruit, incense, and lighted lamps. Dressed in vibrant saris, they wade into the water with grace and purpose.

Their gestures are precise. Their devotion is visible. Each movement carries meaning, passed down through generations.

These women pray for health, family, and renewal. They do not speak much. Their faith speaks for them.

This series honors their presence, their strength, and their sacred bond with nature. In these moments, fire meets water. Devotion meets light.
